Saginaw Public Schools in Michigan were suffering from the consequences of the recession. Athletic programs were about to be cut. The only way student-athletes with the ambition of making it to the professional ranks had a chance to pursue their dreams was if they were to pay their way through high school athletics through a pay-to-play system.
In Saginaw County, though, this was a difficult task for many members of the community to commit to - especially after hearing that the county would suffer a $1.8 million shortfall in 2013 due to increases in retirement benefits, healthcare, and decreased revenue from property taxes.
In steps LaMarr Woodley.
Woodley, linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers and former Saginaw High star, recognized the trials and tribulations facing the county and donated $60,000 to help cover the pay-to-play fees.
Now, student-athletes have a better chance to pursue their dreams.
