For every Lancaster-Lebanon League team but
Wilson, this weekend marks the start of the winter sports season. Everyone else is turning their attention to basketball, wrestling or the other indoor sports, the Bulldogs are still playing football. The Section 1 champions captured their sixth District 3 Class AAAA crown on Saturday with a 21-10 victory over
Central Dauphin, and remain active in the
PIAA playoffs.
Wilson will take on WPIAL champion
Pine-Richland in the state semifinals on
Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mansion Park in
Altoona.
Pine-Richland’s name should ring a bell for L-L League fans; the Rams fell 39-38 to Manheim Central in an epic double-overtime thriller in the 2003 state AAA final. The game was played in the midst of a blizzard, which dropped close to a foot of snow on the field in Hersheypark Stadium, was decided when the Barons blocked a PAT kick in the second overtime. Many people who were there — myself included — call it the best football game they’ve ever seen.
The Rams are now a Class AAAA team, and come into Saturday’s matchup sporting a perfect 14-0 record. Pine-Richland is ranked second in two statewide Class AAAA polls. Since Wilson is also undefeated — and also ranked in the state’s top five — one team is going to leave Altoona feeling mighty disappointed.
Which team will that be?
