Remembering Stuart Scott

The news of the passing of Stuart Scott hit close to home at R.J. Reynolds High School on Monday. While most students across the country were coming back from winter break buzzing about holiday on goings, R.J. Reynolds High School started their day on a more somber note. Scott’s North Carolina Alma Mater began the day with a moment of in remembrance for the ESPN Anchor. "Reynolds High School lost one of their family members, a graduate, who passed before his time,’’ said Principal Pat Olsen. “He lived life to the fullest. He didn't let cancer beat him. “Former Reynolds Principal, Stan Elrod, was one of Scott’s coaches during his time at the high school. “He had great hands. He was a good athlete,’’ said Elrod. Vice President of the student body, Scott exemplified what is meant to be a leader. "To be honest with you, the leadership positions at that time were not as diverse as they are today. That tells you that Stuart stood out," said Elrod. Before becoming the ESPN talent he is known for today, he played football at the University of North Carolina, where he graduated in 1987. "The work ethic he had while at ESPN is an example for everybody, really, if you work hard, you can make your way,’’ said Olsen. Even after his established career with ESPN, Scott never lost his connection with his roots. One could often view the shout out to Reynolds and his former number 83. "Those were the homegrown components of Stu, that he always knew where his roots were, and he respected them and loved them," said Elrod Elrod kept in touch with Scott for the past 30 years, the last seven of which he has battled cancer. Scott was voted into the Reynolds High School Hall of Fame in August, but he was too ill to be inducted during the football season. Scott’s passing at the age of forty-nine certainly left an impression on those in the field of sports broadcasting, high school and college athletes, and all that had the honor of knowing him. "It may be a short 49 years, but he filled it up with an awful lot of success,” said Elrod. "As principals, as coaches, as teachers, our greatest rewards are our students going out and making a difference.” Leaving a hole in the hearts of many, Scott has made his mark on this earth.   If you were a fan of Mr. Scott and his work, please leave your comments below.
